Many homeowners choose vinyl siding for ease of maintenance. When you stick to regular upkeep, vinyl siding exteriors can last up to their full potential while elevating your curb appeal.

Four Easy Tips to Maintain Vinyl Siding

But what does it take to maintain them?

  1. Inspect. It’s a good idea to give your home a periodic walk-around, looking for cracks or breaks in the siding. These fissures can lead to insect infestation, structural damage, or water leakage when left to worsen. Look for streaking, staining, or loose panels that may indicate an area of rot beneath the siding. Call a professional to address irregular areas before they lead to problems.
  1. Clean Regularly. Clean your vinyl siding at least once a year to remove the buildup of dust and dirt and prevent the growth of mold and mildew. If you do it regularly, it will likely just take a rag and a garden hose to clean, along with a long-handled brush to reach higher parts of the walls. Soapy water or a vinegar solution can also be used for tougher spots or areas of mold or mildew, but it’s best to avoid harsh chemicals.
  1. Pressure-Wash with Caution. Power or pressure washers use strong jets of water to remove dirt from surfaces. Those blasts of water can cause interior damage if they enter under the siding panels. Follow directions for the power washer and stand a few feet away from the house, holding the washer with two hands at a low angle.
  1. Move Your Grill. Vinyl siding can warp or melt under exposure to flame or extreme heat, so keep your grill at least 10 feet away from the home.
